Louisiana Book Festival Project

Mrs. Hill’s 4th grade homeroom class and Ms. Riddle’s Kindergarten class participated in a project to honor G. Brian Karas, the illustrator of the children’s book Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla. G. Brian Karas and the author, Katherine Applegate, were the winners of the 2017 Grades 3-5 Louisiana Young Reader’s Choice Award.

The students worked to create special cards for Mr. Karas. The 4th grade students wrote the messages from the perspective of Ivan, thanking Mr. Karas for his artistic

contribution in sharing Ivan’s story with the world. The Kindergarten students produced lovely finger-painted artwork to illustrate the cards.

On Saturday, October 28, a number of the children attended the presentation of the award crystal to Mr. Karas at the Louisiana Book Festival. After he received the award, the students gathered around him and gave him all of the thank-you cards. Then they were treated to Mr. Karas’ story of his work as an illustrator. He also answered many questions that the children and parents asked about his life and his work.
